چکیده

Awareness of resource consumption in the home is a key part of reducing our ecological footprint yet lack of appropriate understanding and motivation often deters residents from behaviour change. The coming deployment of smart metering technologies, the increasing practicality of embedded devices, and the widespread use of Internet and mobile tools offer new opportunities for “greener” residents. We report on the design and implementation of a holistic interactive system that supports residents in awareness of resource use and facilitates efficient control of house systems to encourage conservation in daily activities. Initial response from two highprofile deployments in unique homes indicates this approach has great potential in engaging residents in sustainable living, but presents many challenges in how technology is integrated into the home environment.

Smart Homes or Smart Occupants? Reframing Computational Design Models for the Green Home

A sustainable home is more than a green building: it is also a living experience that encourages occupants to use fewer resources more effectively. Research has shown that small changes in behaviour in how we use our homes can result in substantial energy and water savings. The design dialogue in the development of efficient buildings has largely focused on energy use simulations, smart automat...

Supporting Tasks in a Programmable Smart Home

One of the most promising domains of pervasive computing is in the area of healthcare. There has been a lot of interest in seeing how smart homes can foster independent living and an enhanced life style for elderly and disabled people, and how active, information-rich hospitals can support both patients and the medical staff in their daily activities. However, one of the key challenges in the a...

Designing the Home to Meet the Needs of Tomorrow ... Today: Deconstructing and rebuilding the home for life

This paper considers the role of smart home technology in relation to current housing design principles. Initially the changing role and function of the house are explored and discussed. The concepts of barrier free 'lifetime homes' and universal design 1 are considered and UK community care and Building Regulations are investigated in relation to the design process. It is contended that the cu...
